Trunk comparison: Audi A3 Sportback vs Tesla Model Y

Key Differences

The Tesla Model Y offers significantly more loading length: with the seats folded down, the trunk of the Model Y is 17.7 in (30%) longer, and even with the first row of seats upright, it is 13.4 in (44%) longer than the Audi A3 Sportback.

The Audi stands out particularly in the vertical dimension: the height of the trunk opening is 3.1 in (12%) larger than the Tesla's, and the depth (loading edge to trunk floor) is 6.3 in (1500%) greater.

All other stated differences (loading edge height +1.2 in, width differences ±1.6 in) are under 10% and comparatively minor.

Impact on Usability

The greater loading length of the Model Y allows for transporting longer items — especially practical when seat rows are folded down or when loading across the entire length (e.g., slats, furniture parts, long tools). The Model Y is therefore better suited when length is more important than depth or opening height.

The Audi A3, on the other hand, has advantages with tall or bulky cargo: the larger trunk opening makes it easier to maneuver tall items inside, and the significantly greater depth between the loading edge and trunk floor provides more usable interior space under the loading opening (more stacking height in the lower area).

However, the greater depth also means heavy items must be lifted further down — which can make loading more difficult.

Smaller differences such as loading edge height and widths (each about 4%) have little practical effect: the loading edge of the Model Y is slightly higher, making lifting a bit more strenuous, and the widths are hardly relevant for most standard cargo.
