Key Differences (highlighted: >10%)

The BMW X5 offers a significantly larger trunk opening height: +5.1 in (19%) compared to the i4. The narrowest width in the trunk is +8.7 in (25%) greater in the X5, and the width of the trunk opening is +5.9 in (16%) wider in the X5 than in the i4. The loading edge of the X5 sits +3.5 in (13%) higher above the road than that of the i4. In contrast, the BMW i4 has a significantly deeper trunk well (distance from loading edge to trunk floor): +3.5 in (900%) deeper than the X5.

Implications for Usability

Due to the higher opening and greater width (both at the narrowest point and at the opening), the X5 is clearly better suited for wide or tall cargo (e.g., furniture, boxes, bulky sports equipment).

The higher opening facilitates loading tall items but, combined with the higher loading edge, makes lifting heavy loads into the trunk more strenuous.

The i4 scores with its deeper trunk well: items can be recessed deeper, which reduces shifting and makes luggage easier to reach at a lower loading edge.

This is practical for groceries or heavy items that should not be lifted far. However, the lower opening height and narrower width more strongly limit the accommodation of very large or wide items.

The length differences with folded seats or with the first row upright (each +6% in favor of the X5) are minor and have little practical effect: the ability to load long items is only minimally improved in favor of the X5.
