Key Differences

The most significant differences concern width, opening, and the relation of the loading edge to the trunk floor.

The Ford Focus Wagon has a 9.8 in (28%) wider width at the narrowest point of the trunk and a 5.5 in (15%) larger trunk opening than the BMW i4. The BMW i4 has a trunk depth (distance from loading edge to trunk floor) that is 3.1 in (400%) greater and a loading edge that is 2.8 in (11%) higher above the road than the Focus.

Smaller differences below the 10% mark are: the Focus has +3.1 in (5%) and +2.4 in (6%) more loading length with folded seats and upright front seats respectively, as well as a +1.6 in (6%) higher trunk opening.

What are the practical implications?

The greater width of the Focus (especially at the narrow point and the opening) makes it significantly more practical for wide or bulky loads: furniture parts, wide boxes, strollers, or bulky sports equipment can be loaded more easily and placed crosswise.

Loading large, flat items is also noticeably easier due to the wider opening.

The BMW i4, on the other hand, offers a deeper cargo area due to its significantly greater trunk depth. This can be advantageous when transporting items low and stacked or storing them discreetly (better deep compartment effect).

Combined with the higher loading edge, however, this also means: heavier or bulky parts must be lifted higher and then lowered into a deeper compartment – increasing the effort and making handling less comfortable than with the Focus.

The smaller length and opening advantages of the Focus (+6–3.1 in, +1.6 in opening height) are rather marginal in everyday use: they provide slightly more loading length with folded seats but do not fundamentally change usability.

In short: Those who frequently transport wide or bulky loads will noticeably benefit from the Ford Focus Wagon.

Those who benefit from a deeper, recessed cargo space (and occasionally carry hidden or stacked loads) will find an advantage in the BMW i4 – but will have to lift heavier loads over the higher loading edge more often.
