Main Differences

The most noticeable differences mainly concern trunk depth, usable length, and interior width. The BMW i4 offers a significantly greater trunk depth: +3.5 in (900%) compared to the Tiguan. Additionally, the i4 is longer in the trunk with the first row of seats upright: +3.9 in (11%).

The VW Tiguan, on the other hand, is wider at the important cross sections: the narrowest point of the trunk is +5.1 in (15%) larger and the width of the trunk opening is +5.9 in (16%) more than the BMW.

Impact on Usability

These differences lead to clearly different strengths in everyday use: The BMW i4 is better suited for longer, slender cargo — long suitcases, skis, or furniture parts benefit from the greater depth and longer usable length with the first row of seats upright.

The lower loading edge of the i4 (smaller difference, not highlighted) also makes it easier to slide in and lift out luggage.

The VW Tiguan is more practical when handling wide or bulky items: the greater width at the narrowest point and the wider opening make it easier to load large boxes, strollers, or wide furniture pieces.

The higher opening dimension (not >10% in the sources) and generally larger lateral extension make it more versatile for family and transport tasks where volume in the lateral direction is important.

In practice, this means: for regular transport of long, narrow items or when the cargo should lie deeper in the trunk, the BMW i4 is advantageous.

For frequent loading of bulky or wide parts and easier maneuvering of large objects, the VW Tiguan is better suited. With seats fully folded down, the capacities are very similar (only +1.6 in or 2% in favor of the i4).
