Trunk comparison: BMW iX1 vs Tesla Model 3

Key Differences

In terms of cargo space, it is particularly noticeable that the Tesla Model 3 is significantly longer: +9.8 in (15%) when all seats are folded down, and +6.7 in (19%) when the rear seatback is upright. Furthermore, the BMW iX1 has a considerably higher trunk opening: +7.9 in (38%) in height compared to the Tesla.

Also notable is the greater depth of the Tesla trunk (measured from the loading edge to the trunk floor): +3.5 in (450%) in favor of the Model 3. The other differences (loading edge height +2 in / 7%, narrowest width +2 in / 5%, opening width +3.5 in / 9%) are less than 10% and therefore less significant.

Impact on Usability

The longer cargo lengths of the Tesla (both with folded and upright rear seats) make it better suited for long items such as slats, skis, or long boxes — it offers more usable depth lengthwise.

The significantly greater depth (loading edge to floor) reinforces this advantage: more volume and a deeper cargo floor provide space for bulky or tall cargo, but when lifting heavy items, this may mean they have to be lifted or lowered deeper into the interior.

The BMW iX1, on the other hand, scores with a much higher trunk opening. This makes loading tall or bulky objects easier because more vertical space is available at the transition to the opening (a cabinet part, tall boxes, or larger plants can be maneuvered in more easily at an angle).

Practically, this means: Tesla = better for long and low-lying cargo; BMW = better for tall or bulky cargo when loading and unloading.

For everyday use and frequently changing luggage shapes, this means: Those who often transport long or flat items (e.g., sports equipment, longer furniture parts) have more flexibility with the Tesla.

Those who regularly load tall, bulky items benefit from the higher opening of the BMW iX1. Smaller differences in width and loading edge height are hardly decisive in normal use.
