Trunk comparison: BMW iX1 vs VW ID.3

Key Differences and Their Consequences

The BMW iX1 offers a loading length that is 4.3 in (≈14%) longer with the first row of seats upright than the VW ID.3. This makes the iX1 more practical for long items to be transported without folding down seats (e.g., furniture boards, skis, or bulky boxes).

Additionally, the width of the trunk opening in the BMW is 5.1 in (≈14%) larger, allowing wider cargo to fit more easily and with less maneuvering through the opening (suitcases, strollers, flat furniture parts).

In contrast, the VW ID.3 has a significantly deeper trunk well: the depth (loading edge to trunk floor) is 5.5 in (≈700%) greater than in the iX1. This means more usable volume below the loading edge and a better ability to store items “recessed” (e.g., shopping bags, tools, wet gear) without them protruding over the loading edge.

However, the combination of a higher loading edge (ID.3 sits about 2 in higher above the road) and a deeper well can make lifting heavy items somewhat more strenuous, even though the deeper well overall offers more secure storage space.

Other differences are minor (<10%): the BMW iX1 has a slightly longer loading length by 3.5 in with seats folded down, the ID.3 has a slightly higher opening height (+1.2 in) and minimally more width (+0.4 in) at the narrowest point. These deviations hardly affect everyday use compared to the above-mentioned differences, which clearly exceed 10%.
