Trunk comparison: BMW iX1 vs VW T-Cross

Comparison of trunk dimensions for the BMW iX1 and VW T-Cross
Comparison of trunk dimensions for the BMW iX1 and VW T-Cross

Key Differences

The BMW iX1 offers a loading floor that is 6.7 in (≈12%) longer with the seats folded down and even 9.4 in (≈36%) longer with the first row of seats upright compared to the VW T-Cross. The width of the trunk opening is about 11% (≈4.3 in) larger in the iX1. In contrast, the VW T-Cross has a significantly greater depth between the loading edge and the trunk floor: +5.5 in, stated as +700% compared to the iX1.

Implications for Usability

Thanks to the greater loading length (both with folded seats and with the rear bench upright) and the wider opening, the iX1 is more practical for long or wide items — for example, long furniture parts, skis, or wide boxes can be loaded more easily and maneuvered better through the wider opening. The larger opening width also makes it easier to load bulky cargo from the side. The T-Cross scores with the significantly greater depth of the cargo area: it offers more vertical space near the floor and thus advantages when stacking taller items or storing deep crates in the trunk. However, a significantly lower trunk floor can make reaching items placed far back more difficult and require lifting heavy loads over the loading edge. Small differences such as the 2–1.2 in higher opening height or the 0.4 in higher loading edge in the iX1 are hardly relevant in practice. The narrowest interior width is the same in both models, so narrow, longitudinally placed items fit similarly well in both.
