Significant Differences (>10%)

Height of the trunk opening: The Mercedes-Benz GLB has a trunk opening that is 6.3 in (22%) higher than the BMW X1. This means significantly more vertical loading clearance when loading.

Depth of the trunk (loading edge → trunk floor): This dimension is 3.5 in (300%) larger in the GLB. Thus, the GLB has a significantly deeper cargo well compared to the X1.

Implications for usability

The higher opening makes it easier to load tall or bulky items in the GLB: furniture edges, tall boxes, or standing objects often fit better without tilting.

Since the loading edge is almost the same height (+0.4 in, = 1%), the larger opening does not mean noticeably more lifting effort over the sill—there is mainly more headroom when loading.

The significantly deeper loading surface of the GLB increases usable volume and allows luggage and cargo to be stored deeper and thus less visible or more secure.

At the same time, lifting heavy items in and out can be somewhat less familiar or more strenuous because they are placed deeper and require reaching further down/back.

In practice, this means: For users who frequently transport tall or bulky cargo (e.g., large boxes, bulky everyday items), the GLB is clearly advantageous. Those who mainly transport flat, easy-to-handle items or value easy removal without deep bending will perceive the difference as neutral to slightly unfavorable.

In brief: smaller differences

Smaller deviations: The GLB has +5.1 in (8%) more cargo length when seats are folded and +2 in (6%) more with the first row upright; the narrowest trunk width is +1.6 in (4%) larger in the GLB.

The width of the trunk opening is +0.4 in (1%) larger in the X1. These differences have only minor impact on everyday use compared to the significant advantages of the GLB in height and depth mentioned above.
