Trunk comparison: BMW X1 vs VW Golf Wagon

Key Differences

The VW Golf Wagon offers a significantly longer loading area: with the rear seats folded down it is +9.1 in (14%) longer and with the front seats upright +7.5 in (21%) longer than the BMW X1. Furthermore, the Golf has a considerably greater trunk depth (loading edge to trunk floor): +3.1 in (267%).

In contrast, the loading edge of the BMW X1 is +3.9 in (16%) higher above the ground. Smaller differences: The height of the trunk opening on the Golf is +2.4 in (8%) higher and the width of the trunk opening of the BMW X1 is +2.8 in (7%) larger; the narrowest width is the same on both models.

Impact on Usability

Due to the longer loading areas in the Golf Wagon, longer items (e.g., slats, skis, furniture parts) can be accommodated more easily — both with folded seats and with the front row upright.

The greater trunk depth of the Golf also means more usable volume in depth; as a result, bulky or elongated loads fit better in the trunk.

The higher loading edge of the BMW X1 makes lifting heavy items into the trunk more strenuous and complicates sliding long or heavy loads over the edge. For frequent loading and unloading of heavy cargo, the Golf is therefore more practical.

Smaller advantages of the X1 (slightly larger opening width) and the 2.4 in higher opening height of the Golf are useful but affect everyday practicality less noticeably than the above-mentioned differences of more than 10%.
