Key Differences

There are three relevant differences in cargo space exceeding 10%: The Tesla Model Y has a 8.7 in (≈13%) longer load floor with the rear seats folded down compared to the BMW X4, the X4 features a 3.1 in (≈700%) deeper trunk recess (measured from the loading edge to the trunk floor), and the loading edge of the X4 is 3.5 in (≈13%) higher above the road than that of the Model Y.

What this means in practice

The longer cargo length of the Model Y with folded seats makes it better suited for transporting long items such as slatted frames, long furniture parts, or skis: these can be loaded flatter and further in. This advantage is especially noticeable when regularly transporting bulky, elongated cargo.

The significantly deeper trunk recess in the BMW X4 offers more usable vertical volume and allows items to be "sunk" below the loading edge – useful for storing luggage or groceries that should not be visible, or to increase packing volume with the same external dimensions.

However, the higher loading edge of the X4 increases the effort required when loading: heavy or bulky items must be lifted higher, making loading more difficult. The Model Y, with its lower loading edge, is more ergonomic and practical for frequent lifting of heavy loads.

Other differences are small (<10%): the Model Y offers about +3.5 in length with the first row of seats upright, and the width and height differences of the opening are only a few centimeters each. These values usually have little impact on usability in practice and rarely decide between the models.
