Trunk comparison: BMW X5 vs Opel Corsa

Key Differences

With the seats folded down, the trunk of the BMW X5 is 21.3 in (41%) longer than that of the Opel Corsa. This means significantly more cargo space for long items. With the first row of seats upright, the X5 is 15 in (58%) longer. Even with normal seat positions, the X5 offers significantly more usable length.

The width at the narrowest point is 5.5 in (15%) greater in the BMW X5 and the width of the trunk opening in the X5 is 9.1 in (27%) larger than in the Corsa.

The depth of the trunk (loading edge → floor) is 6.7 in (1700%) greater in the Opel Corsa – the trunk floor is thus significantly lower relative to the loading edge. Additionally, the loading edge of the BMW X5 is 3.5 in (13%) higher above the road than that of the Corsa.

The height of the trunk opening is 2.8 in (10%) greater in the X5; this difference exactly reaches 10% and is therefore not highlighted as >10% here.

Impact on Usability

The biggest advantage of the BMW X5 is the significantly larger volume in length and width: longer items (e.g., skis, furniture parts, long boxes) fit more easily in the X5 with folded seats or even with normal seat positions.

The larger opening width and the greater narrow width make it much easier to load bulky or wide items.

The Opel Corsa is significantly more limited in length and width; it is practically unsuitable for larger or long cargo. However, the loading edge in the Corsa is lower and the trunk floor significantly deeper relative to the loading edge.

In practice, this means lifting heavy items into the Corsa requires less lifting height, making loading and unloading physically easier than in the higher X5.

The higher loading edge of the X5 (+3.5 in) means heavy cargo must be lifted higher, increasing the effort required when loading. At the same time, the larger interior length and width of the X5 allow for transporting significantly more and bulkier cargo despite the higher loading edge.

Conclusion: For transporting long or wide goods and larger volumes, the BMW X5 is clearly better suited. For frequent lifting of heavy individual items over a low threshold, the more compact Opel Corsa can be more practical but loses significantly in pure cargo capacity and flexibility.
