Comparison of trunk dimensions for the BMW X5 and Peugeot 208

Key Statement

The BMW X5 offers significantly more cargo space and better width dimensions: with the seats folded down, the trunk of the X5 is +21.7 in (42%) longer, and with the first row of seats upright, it is +14.6 in (55%) longer.

The narrowest width in the cargo area is also +5.5 in (15%) larger in the X5, and the width of the trunk opening is +9.1 in (27%) wider.

In contrast, the Peugeot 208 has a significantly greater vertical depth between the loading edge and the trunk floor — this value is +6.7 in (1700%) higher in the 208 than in the X5. Additionally, the loading edge of the BMW X5 is +3.1 in (11%) higher above the road compared to the 208; the height of the trunk opening differs only slightly (+2 in / 7%) and is therefore not relevant.

Impact on Usability

The dimensions of the BMW X5 make it clearly more practical for long, wide, or bulky cargo: furniture, long items (e.g., pipes, skis with folded seats), large suitcases, or bulky boxes can be loaded more easily and organized better.

The greater narrow interior width and the wider opening facilitate loading and rearranging bulky parts.

The Peugeot 208, on the other hand, scores points for practical loading of heavy or low items: due to the lower loading edge above the road (the X5 is +3.1 in (11%) higher here), lifting to loading height is less strenuous.

However, the significantly greater depth between the loading edge and trunk floor in the 208 (+6.7 in (1700%)) means a deeper cargo well — this results in small items lying lower and being harder to reach, while at the same time long or tall items in the loading opening rest less well at the highest point.

In short: For transports with a lot of volume, width, or length, the BMW X5 is the better choice.

For frequent, ergonomic loading and unloading of heavy or low items (e.g., shopping bags, boxes), the Peugeot 208 has advantages due to the lower loading edge but comes with limitations in reachability and handling of small items because of the deeper cargo well.
