Key Differences

The Hyundai i30 Wagon offers significantly more cargo length: +9.8 in (16%) with the seats folded down and +10.2 in (33%) with the first row upright compared to the VW ID.3. Conversely, the VW ID.3 has a higher trunk opening: +3.1 in (12%) and a significantly greater depth from the loading edge to the trunk floor: +6.3 in (1500%).

Additionally, the loading edge of the ID.3 sits higher above the road: +5.9 in (24%). The width differences (narrowest point +0.4 in / opening width +0.8 in in favor of the i30) are under 10% and therefore hardly relevant.

Impact on Usability

Because the i30 Wagon offers noticeably longer cargo space, it is better suited for long items (e.g., slats, boards, skis, long boxes)—this applies both with folded seats and when the rear seats are occupied.

Those who regularly transport longer loads or need to accommodate long items with passengers have more practical options in the i30.

The ID.3, on the other hand, scores with more vertical space and a higher opening: this makes it easier to load tall or stacked cargo and to load bulky boxes in an upright position. The significantly greater depth from the loading edge to the trunk floor means the interior is "deeper" and better suited for stacking.

At the same time, the higher loading edge of the ID.3 is a disadvantage: lifting heavy items over the loading edge is more strenuous and less practical than with the lower i30. For regular loading and unloading of heavy loads (e.g., toolboxes, heavy groceries), the i30 is more comfortable due to the lower loading edge.

Conclusion: For longer, flat, or bulky cargo, the Hyundai i30 Wagon is the better choice; for tall or stacked cargo and the advantage of a higher opening, the VW ID.3 is more suitable—although with a comfort disadvantage when lifting due to the higher loading edge. In terms of width, the vehicles differ very little.
