Trunk comparison: Hyundai Kona vs Seat Ibiza

Comparison of trunk dimensions for the Hyundai Kona and Seat Ibiza

Key Differences

In terms of cargo volume and opening, the Hyundai Kona shows clear advantages: with the seats folded down, the Kona's trunk is 9.8 in (18%) longer than the SEAT Ibiza's, and with the first row of seats upright, it is 7.1 in (26%) longer.

Additionally, the width of the Kona's trunk opening is 6.3 in (18%) larger. In contrast, the SEAT Ibiza has a significantly greater trunk depth (loading edge to trunk floor): this is 5.5 in (280%) higher than in the Kona.

Smaller, less pronounced differences: the height of the Ibiza's trunk opening is 1.6 in (5%) higher, the width at the narrowest point is 2 in (5%) larger in the Kona, and the Ibiza's loading edge is 0.4 in (1%) higher above the road.

Impact on Usability

The Kona is better suited for longer and wider cargo: the significantly longer loading areas with folded or upright seats and the larger opening width make it easier to load bulky items (e.g., long boxes, furniture parts, bicycles with the front wheel removed) and allow more flexibility when loading.

The wider opening reduces the risk of wide items getting caught on the hatch.

The main advantage of the Ibiza lies in the deeper trunk well. The significantly greater depth can mean more vertical volume or a deeper luggage compartment (e.g., for lower but bulky cargo or for storing luggage below the loading edge).

Practically, however, this well also leads to a greater "step effect": heavy cargo must be lifted or lowered over a larger edge, and long flat cargo is harder to slide through. Combined with the narrower opening, loading bulky items in the Ibiza tends to be more cumbersome.

The slightly higher opening height and the minimally higher loading edge of the Ibiza are hardly relevant in everyday use; they somewhat ease sliding in very tall items but do not compensate for the disadvantages in width and length.

Overall, the Kona is the more practical choice when it often comes to long or wide cargo and easy loading. The Ibiza scores if deeper storage volume within a well is desired but brings limitations in handling bulky items.
