Biggest Differences

The VW Golf 5 offers more cargo length: with the seats folded down, the trunk is 6.7 in (11%) longer, and with the front seats upright, it is even 11 in (36%) longer than the Jeep Renegade.

The Jeep Renegade, on the other hand, has significantly greater vertical and depth capacity: the height of the trunk opening is 5.9 in (20%) higher and the depth from the loading edge to the trunk floor is 3.5 in (180%) greater.

Additionally, the Renegade's loading edge is 4.7 in (19%) higher above the ground. Differences in width are minor and under 10%: the narrowest point of the trunk is 1.6 in (4%) wider in the Golf, and the width of the trunk opening in the Golf is 1.2 in (3%) larger.

Impact on Usability

The longer cargo floor of the Golf 5 makes it more practical for long, flat items like slats, skis, or furniture parts — both with folded seats and with the seat row upright, the Golf offers noticeably more cargo length. For transport tasks where length is crucial, the Golf clearly has the advantage.

The Renegade is better suited for bulky or tall cargo: the greater height of the trunk opening and the larger interior depth allow loading of bulky, tall, or bulky items that do not fit as easily in the Golf due to its lower interior height.

However, due to the higher loading edge (by 4.7 in), lifting heavy items into the Renegade is more strenuous, and sliding heavy loads in sideways or across is more difficult.

Since the width differences are very small, they hardly matter in everyday use. In summary: Golf 5 = better for long, flat cargo; Renegade = better for tall, bulky cargo, but with a disadvantage in lifting and loading ergonomics due to the higher loading edge.
