Biggest Differences (>10%)

The Mercedes-Benz GLE offers significantly longer loading options in terms of cargo volume: with the seats folded down, the trunk is 13 in (20%) longer and with the first row of seats upright, 7.9 in (24%) longer than the average SUV.

Additionally, the floor/loading edge geometry differs greatly: the depth of the trunk (loading edge to trunk floor) is 2 in (400%) greater in the average SUV than in the GLE.

Impact on Usability

The greater length extension of the GLE practically means more flexibility for long items (e.g., slats, skis, longer pieces of furniture) and for luggage when all seats are occupied. A longer loading surface also makes it easier to load bulky, longer cargo without folding down seats.

The greater depth in the average SUV (deeper trunk floor relative to the loading edge) increases the usable volume in the lower part of the trunk, making it better suited for stacking boxes or bulky but not very tall items.

At the same time, a deeper floor can make lifting and loading heavy items somewhat less convenient because the loading edge sits relatively higher; the GLE, with a shallower floor/loading edge difference, often allows easier handling and simpler loading/unloading, but tends to offer slightly less "deep" volume.

Other, Smaller Differences

Other deviations are significantly smaller: the trunk opening of the GLE is 1.6 in (5%) higher, the width at the narrowest point is 0.8 in (2%) wider, and the opening width is 1.6 in (4%) larger; the loading edge in the GLE is only about 0.8 in (3%) higher above the road.

These differences are rather marginal in everyday use and only slightly affect usability (easier access, minimally more width when loading).
