Key Differences and Usability

The most noticeable difference lies in the depth of the trunk between the loading edge and the trunk floor: the Nissan Qashqai is 2.4 in (±500%) deeper here than the Volvo XC40.

Practically, this means the Qashqai has a deeper cargo well — more usable volume below the loading edge and more depth for bulky or tall items.

At the same time, the loading edge of the Qashqai sits about 0.8 in higher above the road, making lifting heavy items a bit more strenuous.

The deeper cargo well can make securely storing loose luggage easier (they are less likely to slide out), but it complicates the sideways removal of very heavy loads since a height difference must first be overcome.

Additionally, the Qashqai has advantages at the trunk opening: the opening is about 2.8 in higher and about 1.2 in wider at the narrowest point; the overall width of the opening is around 2.4 in greater. These dimensions make loading and unloading bulky, wide items (e.g., strollers, boxes) easier.

The Volvo XC40, on the other hand, offers a slightly longer loading length — it is about 1.2 in longer with the seats folded down and 1.6 in longer with the front row upright — which makes it minimally better suited for long, flat goods (e.g., slats, long packages).

However, these length differences are relatively small and only noticeably affect very long cargo in practice.

In summary: for bulky, voluminous, or tall cargo as well as better protection/recessing in the cargo floor, the Nissan Qashqai is more advantageous (especially due to the significantly deeper cargo well and larger opening).

For easier handling when lifting heavy items and for very long, flat loads, the Volvo XC40 is minimally more comfortable due to the lower loading edge and slightly longer cargo area.
