Trunk comparison: Opel Astra Wagon vs Tesla Model 3

Comparison of trunk dimensions for the Opel Astra Wagon and Tesla Model 3

Key Differences

The usable loading length with the front seats upright is the same in both models. However, when folding down the rear seats, the Tesla Model 3 offers a cargo area 8.3 in (≈13%) longer than the Opel Astra Wagon.

The height of the trunk opening is significantly greater in the Opel: plus 10.2 in (≈50%) compared to the Tesla.

Between the loading edge and the trunk floor, the Tesla Model 3 has a depth 3.5 in (≈450%) greater than the Astra. The loading edge of the Tesla is also 3.1 in (≈14%) higher above the ground.

At the narrowest point inside the trunk, the Opel is wider: plus 5.5 in (≈15%). The width of the trunk opening in the Opel is only slightly larger (+2 in / ≈5%) and thus does not represent a major difference.

Impact on Usability

With the same base length when the front seats are upright, both vehicles are comparable for everyday use with normal luggage. However, if maximum loading length is needed—for long items like slats, skis, or furniture parts—the Tesla Model 3 has the advantage due to the 8.3 in longer cargo area.

The significantly higher trunk opening of the Opel (+10.2 in) makes loading and unloading tall items easier: boxes, plants, or bulky, tall cargo fit through more easily, and lifting is done at a more ergonomic height. In contrast, the lower opening height in the Tesla can restrict loading of tall items.

The greater depth in the Tesla trunk between the loading edge and floor (+3.5 in) creates more vertical space below the loading edge—useful for storing items deeper and more securely or for bulky, lower cargo.

Combined with the higher loading edge of the Tesla (+3.1 in), this also means that heavy luggage must be lifted higher. Practically, this means Tesla gains in storage volume and flexibility for longer or deeper cargo but loses convenience when lifting heavy loads.

The greater narrow interior width of the Opel (+5.5 in) makes it more practical for wide items that must pass through the narrowest point (e.g., wide boxes or furniture parts).

Overall, the Astra Wagon is more advantageous for tall and wide cargo as well as physically easier loading and unloading; the Model 3 offers more usable length and deeper interior storage but with a higher loading edge.
