Trunk comparison: Peugeot 208 vs Renault Austral

Comparison of trunk dimensions for the Peugeot 208 and Renault Austral

Key Differences

The Renault Austral offers significantly more cargo capacity lengthwise: with the seats folded down, the Austral's trunk is 11.4 in (+22%) longer, and with the first row of seats upright, it is 7.5 in (+28%) longer than the Peugeot 208. Also clearly in favor of the Austral is the trunk opening width: the width of the trunk opening is 10.2 in (+30%) wider than that of the Peugeot.

The Peugeot 208, on the other hand, has a significantly greater "depth" between the loading edge and the trunk floor: the depth is 3.9 in (+125%) greater than that of the Austral.

Impact on Usability

Longer loading surface and wider opening in the Renault Austral mean: easier loading and transporting of long or wide items (e.g., furniture parts, long boards, skis) without folding down seats or with less rearranging.

The larger opening width makes loading and unloading bulky, wide items easier and makes the loading process overall more comfortable.

The greater "depth" of the Peugeot 208 results in a significantly lower loading floor relative to the loading edge. This has two practical consequences: on one hand, items can lie deeper and thus somewhat more protected in the trunk (less visibility, possibly a lower center of gravity).

On the other hand, loading and unloading can be more cumbersome — especially heavy cargo must be lifted over the loading edge or pushed into a deeper cavity, and the usable flat loading volume for very long items may be limited.

Smaller differences (not highlighted) such as the Austral's 2.8 in higher loading edge (≈10%) or the Peugeot's 0.8 in higher trunk opening as well as the Austral's 1.2 in wider narrowest width have only moderate practical effects: the higher loading edge of the Austral requires a bit more effort when lifting heavy loads, the slightly higher opening of the Peugeot and the small width deviation hardly affect everyday usability.
