Key Differences

The VW Golf 5 offers significantly more length in cargo volume: with the seats folded down, the trunk is +15.4 in (≈30%) longer, and when the first row of seats is upright, the length advantage is +15 in (≈57%) compared to the Peugeot 208. The width of the trunk opening is +5.9 in (≈17%) larger on the Golf, while the narrowest width of the trunk is only slightly larger (+1.6 in / 4%).

The Peugeot 208, on the other hand, has a significantly greater "depth" between the loading edge and the trunk floor: +5.1 in (≈260%) compared to the Golf. Additionally, the loading edge of the 208 is +2.8 in (≈11%) higher above the road. Differences in the height of the trunk opening are negligible (+0.4 in / 1%).

Implications for Practical Usability

For long or bulky items (skis, long boxes, furniture parts), the Golf is superior: the significantly greater loading length both with folded seats and with the rear bench upright, as well as the wider opening, make it easier to load long and wide cargo.

The Golf is therefore more versatile for moving, tradesmen’s needs, or frequent transport of large items.

The Peugeot 208 scores in vertical capacity due to the greater depth between the loading edge and the trunk floor. This creates more usable interior space in depth (more "easily stackable" volume below the loading edge), which can be advantageous for taller or bulky items within the cargo area.

At the same time, the higher loading edge makes lifting heavy loads into the trunk more strenuous and limits comfortable loading of heavy items.

In short: for maximum length and wide cargo, the VW Golf 5 is more practical; for deeper, rather bulky but not necessarily very long cargo, the Peugeot 208 offers advantages — albeit with a higher loading height.
