Trunk comparison: Tesla Model 3 vs Tesla Model Y

Key Differences

Two differences stand out clearly from the data: The height of the trunk opening of the Tesla Model Y is 6.7 in (≈33%) larger than that of the Model 3. Additionally, the depth of the trunk (distance from loading edge → trunk floor) in the Tesla Model 3 is 4.3 in (listed as 1000%, this percentage seems inconsistent; the absolute difference is 4.3 in) greater than in the Model Y.

All other differences are significantly smaller (length differences of the loading area +4–2.8 in or +0.4 in width at the opening) or the width at the narrowest point is the same.

Implications for Usability

The larger opening height of the Model Y makes loading and unloading tall or bulky items significantly easier: furniture pieces, boxes, or bulky sports equipment can be maneuvered more upright through the opening. This is especially practical when the seats are folded down and vertical pass-through height is needed.

The greater trunk depth of the Model 3 means the trunk floor lies further below the loading edge. This creates more "depth volume" for flat or low items that can be stored below the loading edge. However, the lower opening height reduces the ability to comfortably lift in or transport tall items upright.

Since the width at the narrowest point is the same and the opening width varies by only 0.4 in, it is mainly height and floor clearance that differentiate practical use: Model Y is better for tall/bulky cargo; Model 3 is advantageous for deeply stored, flat items and a slightly lower loading edge (easier lifting considering the +1.2 in loading edge height of the Y).
