Trunk comparison: Tesla Model 3 vs VW T-Cross

Comparison of trunk dimensions for the Tesla Model 3 and VW T-Cross

Key Differences

In terms of cargo space, the Tesla Model 3 shows clear advantages in length: With the seats folded down, the trunk of the Model 3 is 16.5 in (29%) longer than that of the VW T-Cross, and with the front seats upright, it is even 16.1 in (62%) longer.

In contrast, the VW T-Cross offers significantly more vertical space: The trunk opening height of the T-Cross is 7.1 in (35%) higher, and the depth from the loading edge apex to the trunk floor is 2 in (45%) greater than in the Model 3.

Other, smaller differences: The loading edge of the T-Cross is 1.6 in (6%) higher above the ground, the narrowest width inside the trunk is 2 in (5%) larger in the T-Cross, and the width of the trunk opening is 0.8 in (2%) larger in the Model 3.

Impact on Usability

The greater length of the Model 3 makes it clearly better suited for long items (e.g., boards, skis, furniture parts) and for transport tasks requiring folded seats. Even with the front seats upright, the Model 3 retains significantly more usable loading length, simplifying everyday handling of bulky, elongated goods.

The higher trunk and greater depth of the T-Cross, on the other hand, favor loading bulky, tall, or bulky items (boxes, crates, plants, luggage) because more vertical space and distance from the loading edge are available.

The higher opening height facilitates loading bulky parts that might otherwise be limited by height.

The slightly higher loading edge of the T-Cross (≈6%) can make lifting heavy items marginally more difficult, while the slightly larger narrowest interior width of the T-Cross (≈5%) and the marginally larger opening width of the Model 3 (≈2%) are rarely decisive in practice — these differences only become relevant with very wide cargo.

In summary: For elongated cargo and flexible trunk space, the Tesla Model 3 wins; for tall or bulky cargo and easier loading and unloading of bulky parts, the VW T-Cross has the advantage.
