Trunk comparison: BMW 3 Series Touring vs BMW X2

Comparison of trunk dimensions for the BMW 3 Series Touring and BMW X2

Key Differences

The clearly noticeable differences concern the loading edge and trunk depth: The BMW X2 has a significantly higher loading edge than the 3 Series Touring (+7.9 in / +33 %) and at the same time a greater depth between the loading edge and trunk floor (+3.1 in / +800 %).

The other dimensions are below the 10% mark: the 3 Series Touring offers slightly more length with folded seats (+3.5 in / 5 %) and also more cargo length with the first row upright (+2.8 in / 8 %); the trunk opening is marginally higher on the 3 Series (+2.4 in / 9 %) and minimally wider (+0.4 in / 1 %).

The narrowest width in favor of the X2 is only slightly larger (+2 in / 5 %).

Impact on Usability

Because the loading edge of the X2 is 7.9 in higher, items must be lifted significantly higher when loading; this makes loading heavier or bulkier cargo more strenuous.

The greater depth of 3.1 in means that the trunk floor of the X2 is nominally deeper below the loading edge; mathematically, however, the trunk floor of the X2 still remains about 4.7 in higher above the road than that of the 3 Series (7.9 in higher loading edge minus 3.1 in deeper interior height).

In practice, this means: with the X2, the lift to the cargo area is greater, while the interior space drops slightly below the loading edge – this can be advantageous for small items sliding into the floor, but disadvantageous for heavy lifting.

The 3 Series Touring scores with its longer loading dimensions (even if they are under 10%) and the slightly higher trunk opening: longer or flat-lying items can be accommodated more easily, and the lower loading edge height makes lifting heavy loads easier.

The small width differences (±1–5 %) are usually irrelevant in everyday use but can be relevant for very wide, bulky items in tight spaces.
