Key Differences

The clearest advantage of the Mercedes‑GLE is the longer cargo area with the seats folded down: +9.4 in (14%) compared to the Mazda CX‑5. Conversely, the Mazda CX‑5 has a significantly greater depth between the loading edge and trunk floor: +2 in (400%) compared to the GLE.

All other differences (trunk length with front seats upright +3.5 in/9%, opening height +0.8 in/3%, loading edge height +0.4 in/1%, opening width +1.6 in/4%, narrowest width equal) are under 10% and thus comparatively insignificant.

Impact on Usability

The longer cargo area of the GLE with folded seats makes it more practical for longer items (e.g., slats, skis, long furniture parts) and for maximum usable length when transporting large, elongated cargo. With normal seating, the length difference (+3.5 in/9%) is hardly noticeable.

The greater depth of the Mazda (loading edge → trunk floor) means the trunk floor is positioned further below the loading edge. This creates more protected storage space below the loading edge and helps to securely stow luggage without it easily rolling out or protruding over the loading edge.

At the same time, a deeper floor can make lifting heavy items over the loading edge more difficult and loading and unloading somewhat less convenient.

Since the width at the narrowest point is the same and the opening width/height only vary slightly, in practice the two mentioned differences are decisive: GLE for longer cargo, CX‑5 for a deeper, more protected trunk area.
