Trunk dimensions Average Cargo Van

Vehicle Type

A “Cargo Van” is typically understood as a light commercial panel van designed for commercial goods transport and small deliveries in urban and regional traffic.

Characteristic features include an enclosed cargo area behind the passenger cabin, a comparatively simple, robust construction, and a payload and size that lie between passenger cars and trucks.

Such vans are usually two-axle, have rear or side sliding doors, and offer space for bulky goods, tools, or pallets in a compact, maneuverable package. They are available in various length and height combinations to cover a wide range of transport requirements.

Variants

Within this type, several common variants exist that differ significantly in trunk dimensions: short/long wheelbase (short or extended cargo area), low/high roof (low or significantly higher interior height), and panel van versus chassis/cab.

There are also combination solutions such as crew cabs with low cargo height or chassis variants with custom-built cargo areas.

Small vans (city vans) typically have less volume and shorter cargo areas, while high roof and long wheelbase variants significantly increase cargo space and allow for higher clearance heights. The variety of these variants significantly influences cargo volume, cargo height, cargo width, and usable length.

Trunk Volume

The trunk of an average cargo van is optimized for utility: flat loading floor, robust interior lining or galvanized cargo area, lashing eyes, possibly lashing rails, and a fixed bulkhead or partition to the driver’s cabin.

Typical cargo volumes roughly range from about 3 m³ in small city vans up to around 12–17 m³ in large, high-roof panel vans; mid-sized variants fall in the range of 6–9 m³.

Usable lengths vary depending on wheelbase from just under 2 m to over 4 m, interior heights from about 1.1–2.0 m. Payload (permissible load) is often between around 600 kg and 1,500 kg, varying by base vehicle and body.

Practical features include low loading edges, optional reinforced loading floors, additional side or roof windows for visibility and light, as well as modular interior fittings such as shelving systems, toolbox mounts, or load securing sets.

History

Light vans originated from early delivery vans and passenger car-based conversions in the early to mid-20th century as trade and crafts became motorized.

In the post-war period, increasing commercial activities and evolving logistics concepts led to specialized panel vans with greater payload and standardized dimensions.

From the 1970s/1980s onwards, series production of modern, independent cargo van models was established, followed by expansion into diverse variants (length/height, payload classes).

In recent decades, modularization, safety features, improved ergonomics, and stricter emission standards have shaped development; currently, there is a clear trend towards electric drives and connected fleet functions, transforming commercial vehicles in urban logistics and crafts.

Classics

Typical, widely used models of this type have been certain designs for decades, frequently used in Europe and worldwide: model ranges from major manufacturers offering variants in many sizes and configurations.

These include long-known names such as Ford Transit, Volkswagen Transporter/Caravelle in their panel van variants, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, as well as larger Fiat/PSA Boxer models.

Such vehicles have become established in crafts and commerce over a long time due to their wide range of body options, spare parts, and workshop support. These “classics” cover different payload and volume segments and have produced numerous variants.

More Affordable Models

More affordable options can be found both in the new vehicle segment as entry-level models of smaller series and on the used market.

More compact vans with lower basic equipment and smaller engines are cheaper to purchase; examples in the budget segment include small panel vans from manufacturers with cost-effective model lines or brands with reduced equipment levels.

On the used market, older examples of common models can be acquired significantly cheaper, though condition, mileage, and modifications must be considered. For buyers with a tight budget, besides new car special offers, certified used vehicles and simple base variants are especially recommended.
