Trunk dimensions Average Convertible

Car Type

A convertible is a passenger car with at least a partially removable or retractable roof that allows open-air driving. The body styles range from small roadsters (2-seater) to 2+2 sports coupes and four-door convertibles based on sedans.

Technically, the type is characterized by reinforced body supports or additional cross members to compensate for the torsional stiffness lost due to the absence of a fixed roof.

The roof construction – textile soft top or metallic, electrically retractable hardtop – significantly influences weight, space requirements, and thus the trunk space.

Variants

Convertibles come in variants that differ significantly in trunk volume.

The main variants include: soft-top convertibles with textile roofs that fold compactly and therefore often leave more storage space; convertibles with foldable metal or plastic hardtops that require more installation space when the roof is retracted, thus reducing trunk volume more; and fixed targa or roadster variants that present different compromises in storage space and construction.

Additionally, seating arrangement (two seats vs. 2+2) and vehicle class (small city cars to luxury grand tourers) affect trunk size: small sports cars typically have smaller trunks than four-seat convertibles on mid-size platforms.

Trunk Volume

The trunk of an average convertible is characterized by several distinctive features: irregular shapes, limited height, and volume losses due to the roof mechanism.

Typical volume ranges are widely spread: roadsters and small two-seaters usually fall in the lower range, compact 2+2 models in the mid-range, and larger convertibles or grand tourers offer correspondingly more space.

When folding down the roof, the roof construction – especially with rigid folding hardtops – often occupies a significant portion of the cargo volume, so the usable volume varies greatly depending on the roof position.

Practically, this means: trunk shapes are often flat and wide, which complicates loading bulky, tall luggage; however, long, flat items can be accommodated well. Many manufacturers offer split rear seats, pass-throughs, or removable load covers to increase flexibility.

Features such as luggage nets, tie-down hooks, removable shelves, or separate storage compartments for the roof are common to improve usability. Load limits and roof weight should be considered when loading; some models require the trunk to be empty or certain areas to be kept clear when retracting the roof.

History

The development of the convertible progresses from simple, lightweight roof solutions to technically complex, fully automatic systems.

Early convertibles were mostly textile roofs on open chassis; with the rise of mass production, comfort-oriented variants with fixed rear sections and better weather protection options emerged.

In the 1990s and 2000s, electric hardtops became widespread, offering more sunroof comfort at coupe level but at the expense of trunk space.

At the same time, lightweight soft tops remained popular because they occupy less volume and are more affordable. Modern convertible models integrate reinforced floors and optimized roof compartments to reduce the compromise between open driving and transport capability.

Safety technology such as roll bars, reinforced A-pillars, and side impact protection also influenced space layout and weight.

Classics

Well-known and often considered “classic” convertibles include sports cars like the Mazda MX-5 (Miata), long regarded as the prime example of pure roadster fun, as well as historic models like the Mercedes SL, Porsche 911 convertible, and classic British cars such as MG or Triumph sports cars.

Coupe-based convertibles from BMW (e.g., 3 Series convertible), Audi (A5 convertible), and Mercedes (C- or E-Class convertible) are also common representatives, offering a combination of everyday usability and open-air driving experience.

These classics show different approaches to trunk design: small roadsters are rather minimalist, while premium convertibles offer larger but split cargo spaces.

More Affordable Models

More affordable entry points into the convertible world often include small city and entry-level models with fabric roofs or older used cars: examples are compact convertibles like the Fiat 500C, older MINI convertible generations, or cheaper models from Peugeot, Renault, and Ford from previous model years.

Used car markets also offer numerous older roadsters and compact convertibles that are inexpensive but may involve stronger compromises in comfort or weatherproofing depending on condition and technology.

When buying on a budget, special attention should be paid to the condition of the roof, functionality of the mechanism, and the practical trunk condition, as these features strongly influence comfort and utility.
