Trunk dimensions Saturn Astra

The trunk of the Opel Astra hatchback 2022 offers a volume of about 14.9 cu ft, increasing to approximately 46.8 cu ft when the rear seats are folded down.

The rear bench is split 60:40, allowing flexibility for transporting larger items. The interior design is functional with a low loading edge that facilitates loading and unloading.

Trunk dimensions vary within the model range, with the Astra offering different storage compartments and bins depending on the trim level. Typical features include a practical shape and sufficient space for everyday needs, without significant differences between model years.

Model Information

The Opel Astra is a compact car available in various body styles. The latest series of the Astra, offered as a hatchback version, combines modern design with advanced technology.

The Astra is known for its good driving dynamics, comfortable interior, and extensive safety features. It targets buyers seeking a reliable and versatile vehicle suitable for both city driving and longer trips.

Variants of the Same Series

The Opel Astra is available in several variants, including sedan, hatchback, and wagon. The hatchback version is especially popular as it combines a sporty look with practical features.

The sedan offers more trunk space, while the wagon provides increased flexibility for transporting larger items. Buyers should be aware of the differences between these variants to choose the one that best fits their needs.

Yearly Differences

The current model changes for the Opel Astra were introduced in 2021, optimizing body dimensions and trunk volume. The previous generation, produced until 2020, was somewhat more compact and offered less trunk space. Continuous development aims to meet buyers’ needs for more space and flexibility.

Direct Competitors

In the same price range and size, the Opel Astra competes with models like the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. The Golf offers a trunk volume of about 13.4 cu ft, while the Focus is slightly smaller at 13.2 cu ft.

Compared to these, the Astra has an advantage in trunk volume, making it more attractive for buyers needing ample cargo space.

More Affordable Alternatives

More affordable models with similar trunk dimensions include the Dacia Sandero and Skoda Fabia. The Sandero offers about 11.6 cu ft of trunk volume, while the Fabia provides 13.4 cu ft.

Both models are cheaper to purchase but do not offer the same flexibility and features as the Opel Astra. Buyers should weigh whether the savings justify the smaller trunk volumes.

Opel Astra trunk space volume — Trunk volume Opel Astra

Trunk Volume

The Opel Astra (2023) has varying trunk space figures depending on measurement method and drivetrain. Typical values:

Manufacturer specification: 12.4 cu ft
Independent measurements: 9.2 cu ft (under the trunk cover)
Independent measurement up to window sill with folded rear seats: 22.8 cu ft
Volume up to roof height with folded rear seats: Manufacturer 44.8 cu ft, independent measurement 38.1 cu ft
The data overview also lists a reference value of approx. 10.8 cu ft (about −27% compared to the average car)

Important: In the electric version, the battery significantly reduces usable volume (typically: 9.2 cu ft instead of ~10.8 cu ft in conventional models).

Under the trunk floor, there is nominally ~0.5 cu ft of additional storage space, but this is usually occupied by the tire repair kit, warning triangle, and first aid kit.

Practical consequence: For everyday use (shopping, luggage for 1–2 people), the volume is sufficient. For larger luggage amounts or longer vacations, users should plan to fold down the rear seats, as this provides significantly more cargo space.

Vehicle Size and Parking Friendliness

The Astra measures 172 in (L) × 73.2 in (W) × 58.7 in (H). Compared to the average car, it is 7.5 in shorter, 0.4 in wider, and 3.1 in lower.

It is about 24.8 in shorter and approximately 25.2 in narrower than a typical parking space — making parking and maneuvering much easier in daily use.
Despite the compact length, the width (73.2 in) should be noted: when parking in very tight spots, mirrors and door openings may be tighter than in narrower competitors.
Empty weight: 1,736 kg; payload: 444 kg. With full occupancy plus luggage, the allowable payload can be quickly exhausted.

Practical implications: The short exterior length improves parking ease and turning radius. Those frequently traveling with multiple passengers and lots of luggage should consider payload and actual available trunk volume (depending on drivetrain).

Trunk Usability and Flexibility

Rear seatback asymmetrically split and with pass-through (standard): good flexibility for long items (e.g., skis).
Folding the seatbacks is easy; headrests do not need to be removed; when folding back, be careful not to pinch seat belts.
Loading edge is just under 27.6 in above the road (not particularly low); a small 3.5 in step hardly hinders loading and unloading.
Trunk lighting is weak (only one lamp on the left). There is no 12‑V socket in the trunk and no electric tailgate drive.
The trunk lid has two practical handles inside; the tailgate lock protrudes and can hit very tall persons on the head.
There are four tie-down rings but no practical side compartments; the lower cover is limited in usability.
Practical: space for up to seven beverage crates (depending on stacking) and up to ~38.1 cu ft with full space utilization behind the front seats.

Everyday effect: The Astra is flexible and practical for most daily tasks — shopping, weekend and sports equipment. For frequent transport of bulky or very heavy loads, the high loading edge, limited base volume in the EV model, and allowable payload should be considered.

General Model Information

Familiarity: The Opel Astra is an established compact model in the C-segment and competes against models like VW Golf, Ford Focus, Peugeot 308, Renault Mégane, and Toyota Corolla.

Special Features / Characteristics: standard keyless entry and start system with motion sensor; however, known vulnerability to relay attacks. The trunk lacks an electric tailgate, a 12‑V outlet, and has weak lighting.

Price-Performance Ratio: Competitive in the segment — good package of features and driving comfort. However, trunk volume is slightly below segment average, especially in electric variants; this may reduce perceived utility for buyers with high space needs.

Competitor Models: VW Golf, Ford Focus, Peugeot 308, Renault Mégane, Toyota Corolla — some offer larger trunks or other strengths (e.g., better loading height, more loading access options).

Conclusion: The Astra is a parking-friendly, flexible compact car with solid everyday capabilities. Those often needing large volume or an electric variant with maximum cargo space should carefully check specific measurements (manufacturer vs. independent) and payload.
