Trunk dimensions Audi A5 Sportback

The Audi A5 Sportback 2021 offers a trunk with a volume of 17 cu ft, expandable up to 45.9 cu ft when the rear seats are folded down.

The rear bench is split 40:20:40, allowing flexibility when transporting luggage. The interior is designed with high quality, featuring a flat loading edge that facilitates loading and unloading.

The trunk dimensions vary slightly within the model range but generally remain consistent in terms of practicality. The trunk shape is typical for a hatchback, combining good accessibility with an appealing design. Overall, the A5 Sportback provides a successful combination of style and functionality in the trunk.

Model Information

The Audi A5 Sportback is an elegant hatchback model that combines sporty design with practical features. The latest series of the A5 Sportback unites modern technologies, high-quality materials, and dynamic driving characteristics.

With a distinctive grille, sharp lines, and a coupe-like silhouette, the A5 Sportback appeals to design-conscious drivers as well as those who value functionality. The interior is characterized by a high level of comfort and state-of-the-art infotainment technology.

Variants of the Same Series

The Audi A5 is available in several variants, including the sedan, convertible, and Sportback. The sedan offers a classic shape focused on elegance, while the convertible provides an open driving experience.

The Sportback, on the other hand, combines the advantages of a coupe with the practicality of a hatchback. It is important not to confuse these variants, as they target different audiences and usage scenarios.

Yearly Differences

The first generation of the Audi A5 was introduced in 2007, followed by a comprehensive facelift in 2016. These changes included adjustments to the bodywork, which also affected the trunk dimensions.

The latest generation, launched in 2020, brought further improvements in aerodynamics and interior design, leading to optimized space utilization. It is important to consider these model years, as dimensions and volume have changed over time.

Direct Competitors

In the same price range and size, the Audi A5 Sportback competes with models such as the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. The BMW 4 Series offers a trunk volume of about 16.6 cu ft, while the C-Class Coupe provides around 16.1 cu ft, slightly less space.

These differences can be decisive for buyers who prioritize cargo space. The A5 Sportback thus positions itself as more spacious and practical compared to its direct competitors.

More Affordable Alternatives

More affordable models with similar trunk dimensions include the Volkswagen Arteon and the Skoda Superb. The Arteon offers a trunk volume of about 19.9 cu ft, making it an attractive option.

The Skoda Superb, known for its generous interior, has a trunk volume of up to 22.1 cu ft. These models are generally less expensive than the Audi A5 Sportback while still providing comparable cargo capabilities.

Trunk Volume

The Audi A5 Sportback 2021 shows different volume figures: manufacturer specification 16.4 cu ft, independent measurement 13.1 cu ft, and a calculated average of about 14.7 cu ft.

Practically relevant is especially the independent measurement of 13.1 cu ft, as it reflects the usable volume under the trunk cover. Removing the cover increases the volume only marginally (to ~15 cu ft) because the flat rear window limits the space early on.

With the rear seats folded down, the values reach up to 24.2 cu ft (up to the window sill, independent measurement) or 38 cu ft (up to roof height, independent measurement). The manufacturer states up to 45.2 cu ft for roof height with folded seatbacks.

Important: Different measurement methods lead to significant deviations — for everyday use, the figure of around 13.1 cu ft under the cover is usually more realistic.

Vehicle Size and Parking Friendliness

The A5 Sportback is 187.4 in long, 72.4 in wide, and 54.7 in high. Compared to the average car, it is 7.9 in longer (+4.3%), 0.4 in narrower (-0.4%), and 7.1 in lower (-11.4%).

The flat roofline makes the vehicle sporty but reduces interior height and thus the vertical usability of the trunk. Despite its length, the car fits easily into standard parking spaces (data indicates it is 9.4 in shorter and 26 in narrower than a standard parking space), and the width remains practical.

Trunk Usability and Flexibility

Practical aspects:

Loading height: The loading edge is at 26.8 in — advantageous for loading heavier groceries.
More volume: Up to eight standard beverage crates fit in the trunk (under the cover 13.1 cu ft).
No double floor: There is no second loading level; an internal step of about 5.9 in remains.
Rear seat variability: Three-part seatbacks, releasable from the rear bench, allow flexible cargo space expansion. When folded, the seatbacks are not completely flat and slope toward the front seats.
Limited roof height: Due to the flat rear section, removing the cover hardly adds storage space; for larger items, the volume up to the window sill (24.2 cu ft) is the reliable figure.
Equipment ergonomics: Electric tailgate is standard; foot sensor and automatic opening via Comfort Key are possible. Inside, there is no grip recess for manually closing the tailgate.
Lighting & handling: Good illumination through strips on the left/right and a lamp in the tailgate trim. Caution: avoid pinching straps when folding the seatbacks back up.

General Model Information

Familiarity: The A5 Sportback is established as a sportily styled hatchback model from Audi, appealing to buyers who combine comfort and design with everyday versatility.

Special features: Flat roofline, standard electric tailgate, three-part rear bench, good interior equipment, and optional comfort extras (e.g., sensor-controlled trunk release, Matrix LED with headlight cleaning system in certain packages).

Characteristics: Low roofline reduces head and loading height; volume figures vary greatly between manufacturer specs and independent measurements. No double trunk floor, no internal grip recess on the tailgate.

Price-performance: Audi positions the A5 Sportback in the premium-oriented mid-range segment. Equipment comfort is high, but some useful extras are available at additional cost (e.g., sensor-controlled functions, ambient lighting, nets/straps in the trunk).

Competitors: Nearby competitors are models with similar concepts and target groups, such as the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, Mercedes-Benz CLA (or CLA Shooting Brake depending on market), and Volkswagen Arteon. These offer comparable compromises between design, driving dynamics, and everyday usability.
