Trunk dimensions BMW 4 Series Convertible

The trunk of the BMW 4 Series Convertible 2014 offers a volume of about 12.4 cu ft, increasing to around 26.5 cu ft when the rear seats are folded down.

The rear bench is split 50:50, allowing flexibility for transporting larger items. The interior design is high-quality, with an elegant finish and practical storage compartments.

The trunk dimensions vary slightly within the model range, with the shape mostly flat and wide, which facilitates loading. The loading edge is relatively low, easing access, while the practical design of the trunk allows good use of the available space.

Overall, the trunk provides a balanced combination of style and functionality that meets the demands of a convertible driver.

Model Information

The BMW 4 Series Convertible is an elegant and sporty convertible that is part of BMW's 4 Series. The latest generation combines dynamic design with advanced technology and offers an open driving experience.

With a focus on driving dynamics and comfort, the model targets buyers who appreciate both performance and style. The convertible offers a variety of engines, including powerful gasoline and diesel options that promise both efficiency and driving pleasure.

Variants of the Same Series

The BMW 4 Series includes several variants, including the coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe. The coupe offers a sportier silhouette and is designed for driving dynamics, while the Gran Coupe provides more space and a practical five-door configuration.

It is important not to confuse these models, as they have different characteristics and target audiences. The convertible stands out with its folding roof and open driving feel.

Yearly Differences

The current generation of the BMW 4 Series Convertible was introduced in 2020. Previous models, especially the first generation (2013-2020), showed differences in body dimensions and thus in trunk volume.

The first generation had a slightly smaller trunk volume, affecting transport options. The 2017 facelift brought some technical changes but did not significantly affect trunk dimensions.

Direct Competitors

In the same price and size class, the BMW 4 Series Convertible competes with models like the Audi A5 Convertible and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible.

The Audi A5 offers a trunk volume of about 13.4 cu ft, making it superior in this regard. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible has a similar volume of about 12.7 cu ft. These differences can be decisive for buyers who value storage space.

More Affordable Alternatives

Those looking for more affordable alternatives with similar trunk dimensions might consider models like the Ford Mustang Convertible or the Volkswagen Golf Convertible.

The Ford Mustang Convertible offers a trunk volume of about 11.7 cu ft, while the Volkswagen Golf Convertible is somewhat smaller at about 8.8 cu ft. These models are generally cheaper but do not offer the same premium features and driving dynamics as the BMW 4 Series Convertible.

Trunk Volume

The trunk volume is 13.6 cu ft (manufacturer specification). This is about -8.33% smaller than an average car. The trunk accounts for around 6.3% of the total vehicle volume (L×W×H/2), which is -0.2 percentage points below the average.

Practical implications: For everyday use, the volume is sufficient for shopping bags or two to three weekend travel bags. Large suitcases, bulky items, or moving transports are limited.

For convertibles, it should also be noted that the specification usually applies with the roof up — when open, the usable cargo area can be significantly smaller depending on the roof mechanism.

Vehicle Size and Parking Friendliness

Dimensions: 187.8 in long, 72.8 in wide, 54.3 in high.

Comparison to average: The vehicle is 8.3 in longer (+4.5%), nearly the same width (+0.1%), and 7.1 in lower (-11.5%) than an average car.

Parking reference: Compared to a standard parking space, the 4 Series Convertible is 9.1 in shorter and 25.6 in narrower.

This means it fits comfortably lengthwise in a marked parking spot, but there is significantly less lateral space. Tight parking garages or very narrow spots require careful parking — door opening and getting in/out may be more restricted.

Trunk Usability and Flexibility

The combination of moderate trunk size and convertible layout brings typical pros and cons:

Positive: Volume is sufficient for everyday use and short trips; the low vehicle height can make loading easier (less lifting).
Negative: With the roof open, the practically usable cargo area often reduces significantly — large or bulky items are less easy to accommodate. Also, wide loads have less lateral clearance due to vehicle width.

Practical recommendation: For convertibles, softer, flexible bags are better suited than rigid suitcases. Those who frequently transport a lot of luggage should plan for the size limit of ~13.6 cu ft or consider alternative transport solutions (roof box, trailer).

General Model Information

Familiarity: The BMW 4 Series Convertible is an established premium convertible in the mid-segment, known for sporty design and driving dynamics.

Special features: Coupe-like lines, emphasized sporty character, and typical BMW driving dynamics; the convertible offers a combination of style and everyday usability but is not designed for maximum practicality.

Characteristics: Lower trunk volume than average and low build; parking requires consideration of reduced lateral clearance.

Price-performance assessment: As a premium product, the 4 Series Convertible is positioned in the upper price segment. Buyers get design, brand, and driving behavior but pay a premium compared to compact cars with greater practicality.

Competitor models: Direct competitors include the Audi A5 Convertible and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible. Depending on priorities (sportiness vs. comfort vs. cargo volume), these alternatives may fit better or worse.
