Trunk dimensions BMW i7

The BMW i7 2023 offers a trunk with a volume of about 17.7 cu ft, which can be expanded up to 63.6 cu ft by folding down the rear seats. The rear bench is split 40:20:40, allowing flexibility when transporting larger items. The interior is designed with high quality, focusing on comfort and functionality.

The trunk dimensions vary slightly within the model range but generally remain spacious and practical. The loading edge is low, making loading easier.

Typical features include good accessibility and a thoughtful layout that simplifies everyday use. The i7's trunk thus combines elegance with practical solutions that meet users' needs.

Model Information

The BMW i7 is the latest sedan in the 7 Series and represents BMW's electric future. With an elegant design, advanced technology, and a focus on sustainability, the i7 offers a combination of luxury and performance.

It is equipped with a powerful electric motor that enables impressive range and dynamic driving performance. The interior is high-quality and features state-of-the-art infotainment systems as well as numerous comfort functions.

Variants of the Same Series

The BMW 7 Series includes various variants, including the traditional sedan, the sportier M version, and plug-in hybrid models. The i7 differs from the other variants by its fully electric drive.

It is important to note the differences between these models, especially regarding the types of drive and the associated driving performance.

Model Year Differences

The BMW i7 was first introduced in 2022. Changes to the body and trunk dimensions have not been significantly documented in the first model years.

However, future model years could bring adjustments in size or design that may affect the trunk. It is advisable to check the technical data when making a purchase decision.

Direct Competition

In the same price range and size, the BMW i7 competes with models like the Mercedes-Benz EQS and the Audi e-tron GT. The EQS offers a trunk volume of about 21.5 cu ft, making it superior in this regard.

The Audi e-tron GT, on the other hand, has a smaller trunk volume of about 14.3 cu ft. These differences can be decisive for buyers who need a lot of cargo space.

More Affordable Alternatives

More affordable models with similar trunk dimensions include the Tesla Model 3 and the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The Tesla Model 3 offers a trunk volume of about 15 cu ft, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 boasts about 18.6 cu ft.

These vehicles are generally less expensive than the BMW i7 and still provide a respectable amount of cargo space for everyday use.

Trunk Volume

The fact sheet lists three different figures for trunk volume: approx. 16.1 cu ft (cited summary), manufacturer specification: 17.7 cu ft, and independent measurements: 14.5 cu ft.

In practice, independent tests usually provide the more reliable value for daily usability – here ~14.5 cu ft, while manufacturer figures often follow different measurement methods or include small additional compartments.

Important for everyday use:

  • 14.5 cu ft practical: enough for about six standard beverage crates.
  • Under the trunk floor, there is an additional approx. 1.8 cu ft for charging cables and small items.
  • There is no frunk; the battery does not restrict the trunk.

Vehicle Size and Parking Friendliness

The i7 is 212.2 in long, 76.8 in wide, and 60.6 in high. Compared to an average car, it is significantly longer (+18.2%) and somewhat wider (+5.4%), but slightly lower (-1.3%).

Practical consequences:

  • The length makes parking in tight garages or standard parking spaces more challenging — the fact sheet states the vehicle is 15.4 in longer than a typical parking spot. Backing in and maintaining sufficient distance from boundaries is important.
  • With 76.8 in width (without mirrors), the vehicle is large, so entering and exiting in tight parking spots or between narrow lanes can be restricted.
  • Height is not a problem for underground garages, but the vehicle length and high curb weight (2715 kg) affect maneuverability and parking maneuvers.

Trunk Usability and Flexibility

The usability of the trunk is shaped by several design decisions:

  • Fixed rear bench: The rear seatbacks are not foldable; thus, the classic option to increase volume by folding seats is not available. Only a standard pass-through opening for long items (e.g., skis) is present.
  • Trunk opening and loading edge: As a sedan, the i7 has a relatively small trunk opening. The loading edge is relatively high at just under 28.7 in, and inside there is a step of about 5.5 in between the loading edge and floor – this complicates loading and unloading heavy or bulky items.
  • Electric tailgate & comfort: The electric tailgate is standard, as is keyless access; a “foot swipe” for hands-free opening is possible. Note: the lid opens upward and forward — the metal latch bar can interfere if opened carelessly.
  • Practical equipment: four tie-down rings in the trunk, two LED lights for illumination, no 12 V socket (which complicates, e.g., using a cooler box).

Conclusion for everyday use: The trunk is sufficient for the class and well thought out for standard luggage and daily shopping. Those who frequently transport larger, bulky items or need a lot of flexibility (e.g., folding rear seats) are better served with wagon or hatchback models.

General Model Information

Familiarity and classification: The BMW i7 is the electric luxury sedan of the 7 Series and serves as the flagship of the upper class. Construction and trunk resemble classic 7 Series BMWs – with typical advantages and disadvantages.

Special features and peculiarities:

  • The battery is arranged so that it does not reduce the trunk.
  • Standard soft-close doors; electrically opening/closing doors available at extra cost.
  • Good mirror and wiper design according to tests — mirrors provide sufficient rear visibility, wiper performance is high quality.
  • Safety note: A test showed an issue with radio signal bridging; BMW has promised a software update to improve distance measurement and safety.

Price-performance ratio: The i7 is a premium vehicle; equipment, comfort, and brand prestige generally justify higher prices compared to mid-range vehicles. For buyers wanting maximum loading flexibility, the price-performance ratio is relativized by the lack of foldable rear seats.

Competitor models: Comparable in class and target group are other electric upper-class sedans like the Mercedes EQS and vehicles from the premium sedan segment.
