Trunk dimensions Honda Civic

The trunk of the 2022 Honda Civic hatchback offers a volume of about 24.3 cu ft with the rear seats folded down and around 14.1 cu ft in the normal state.

The rear bench is split 60:40, allowing flexibility when transporting luggage. The interior design is functional, with a low loading edge that makes loading and unloading easier.

The trunk dimensions vary within the model range, with the hatchback version offering more cargo space compared to sedan models.

Typical features include a rectangular shape that promotes efficient use of space, as well as practical storage compartments in the trunk. The design aims to combine everyday usability with appealing styling.

Model Information

The Honda Civic is a compact car known for its reliability, efficiency, and sporty driving dynamics. The latest generation of the Honda Civic, introduced in 2022, offers a modern design language, advanced technologies, and an improved interior.

The Civic is available in various body styles, including hatchback and sedan, targeting buyers who value both everyday practicality and driving enjoyment.

Variants of the Same Series

The Honda Civic is available in several variants that differ in design and functionality. The most common variants are the hatchback and the sedan.

While the hatchback offers a sportier silhouette and practical access to the trunk, the sedan has a more traditional design focusing on comfort and space. It is important not to confuse these variants as they cater to different target groups and have distinct characteristics.

Yearly Differences

Model changes to the Honda Civic affecting body and trunk dimensions occurred in various years. The current generation, introduced in 2022, features slightly altered shape and dimensions compared to previous models.

In particular, the shift to a sportier line has slightly increased trunk volume compared to the previous generation, while optimizing overall vehicle size to improve aerodynamics.

Direct Competitors

In the compact segment, the Honda Civic competes with models like the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. The Volkswagen Golf offers a trunk volume of about 13.4 cu ft, while the Ford Focus provides around 13.2 cu ft, slightly less space.

In comparison, the Civic hatchback with its 14.5 cu ft has a clear advantage in cargo space, making it more attractive for buyers who need to transport a lot of luggage.

More Affordable Alternatives

There are several more affordable car models offering similar trunk dimensions as the Honda Civic hatchback. Models like the Kia Ceed and Skoda Scala provide trunk volumes of about 13.9 cu ft and 16.5 cu ft respectively.

These vehicles are often cheaper to purchase but may not offer the same equipment or driving dynamics as the Civic. Buyers should weigh the pros and cons to find the right model for their needs.

Honda Civic trunk space volume — Trunk volume Honda Civic

Trunk Volume

The 2024 Honda Civic hatchback offers a trunk volume of about 14.1 cu ft (manufacturer: 14.5 cu ft, independent measurements: 13.8 cu ft). This places it -4.76% below the average car.

Up to the window sill with the rear seats folded down, independent measurements show 29 cu ft. When fully utilized up to the roof, manufacturer figures range from 42.8 cu ft to independent measurements of 46.8 cu ft.

Under the variable trunk floor, there is an additional 0.4 cu ft for small items. The cover over the cargo area reduces usable space to around 13.8 cu ft – removing it increases the space (in some measurements) to about 17.3 cu ft. Practical: up to eight beverage crates can reportedly be accommodated.

Vehicle Size and Parking Friendliness

Dimensions: 180.7 in length, 74.4 in width, 55.1 in height. Compared to the average, the Civic is slightly longer (+0.7%) and wider (+2.1%), but significantly lower (-10.4%).

The body is compact enough for everyday parking: according to specifications, the vehicle is 16.1 in shorter and 24 in narrower than a standard parking space, which facilitates parking and maneuvering in parking spots. The low roofline improves appearance but reduces headroom and access when carrying tall loads.

Trunk Usability and Flexibility

Practical features:

Loading opening and loading edge: The tailgate opens widely, making it easier to load bulky cargo. The loading edge is 26 in above the road, but 6.7 in above the trunk floor, creating a relatively high rear wall that complicates unloading.
Rear seatbacks: Asymmetrically split and foldable; folding does not create a flat loading surface, which affects storing long or bulky items.
Volume measurement variants: For everyday use, the volume up to the window sill with folded rear seats (29 cu ft) is the most practical figure for safety and visibility reasons. Using the space fully up to behind the front seats achieves maximum values (up to 46.8 cu ft).
Comfort and equipment limits: No electric tailgate, trunk lighting is moderate, few nets/side pockets. A special, transversely extendable cargo cover is present and space-savingly designed.
Load capacity: Curb weight 1480 kg, payload 320 kg – heavy loads or multiple passengers with lots of luggage can quickly reach the permissible payload.

General Model Information

Familiarity: The Civic is an established compact model with a sporty-compact appearance. It is well known in the class and often appreciated for its driving dynamics and design.

Special features / peculiarities: Low roofline, low-positioned seats (grab handles facilitate exiting), unusual transversely extendable trunk cover, moderately lit and narrow trunk at the rear bench. Keyless system standard, but with known security concerns regarding range extenders.

Price-performance ratio: Good basic equipment and clever detail solutions (e.g., space-saving cover) contrast with limitations like no electric tailgate, moderate interior lighting, and somewhat below-average trunk volume.

For buyers valuing driving feel and styling, the ratio is often attractive; those wanting maximum cargo flexibility may find better solutions among competitors.

Competitor models: Typical rivals in the compact class are VW Golf, Ford Focus, Mazda3, and Hyundai i30. Compared to these, the Civic offers strengths in design and driving dynamics, while some rivals are equal or better in pure loading variability.
