Trunk dimensions Smart Fortwo Cabrio

The trunk of the Smart Fortwo Cabrio 2016 offers a volume of about 9.2 cu ft with the seats up and up to 12 cu ft with the rear seats folded down.

The rear bench is asymmetrically split, allowing flexibility in transport. The interior is compact and functional, with a high loading lip that makes loading and unloading more difficult.

The trunk dimensions vary slightly within the model range, with a rather square shape that optimizes the use of space. Practical features such as a continuous loading surface and an easily accessible trunk contribute to everyday usability.

Model Information

The Smart Fortwo Cabrio is a compact city car known for its agility and small footprint. The latest series combines modern design with environmentally friendly technology.

With a 2-seat layout and a foldable roof, the Cabrio offers an open driving experience, ideal for urban environments. The Fortwo is available with various powertrain technologies, including electric and gasoline engines, making it a flexible choice for different driving needs.

Variants of the Same Series

The Smart Fortwo is available in several variants, including the Cabrio and the closed sedan. While the Cabrio offers a foldable roof, the sedan has a fixed roof, providing a different driving comfort.

It is important not to confuse these two variants, as they offer different features and usage possibilities. Additionally, there are special editions that may differ in equipment and design.

Yearly Differences

Changes to the body and trunk of the Smart Fortwo Cabrio were made in various model years. In particular, models from 2014 onward received a revision that slightly altered the design and dimensions.

However, these changes did not significantly affect the trunk volume, which remained essentially constant. The differences in body dimensions are mainly cosmetic and affect the vehicle's exterior appearance.

Direct Competition

In the same price range and size, there are several comparable models, such as the Fiat 500 and the Toyota Aygo. The Fiat 500 offers a trunk volume of about 6.5 cu ft, which is smaller than that of the Smart Fortwo Cabrio.

The Toyota Aygo, on the other hand, has a trunk volume of about 5.9 cu ft, making it less spacious as well. These differences show that the Smart Fortwo Cabrio performs relatively well in its category regarding storage space.

More Affordable Alternatives

For buyers looking for more affordable alternatives with similar trunk dimensions, models like the Dacia Sandero or the Kia Picanto could be considered. The Dacia Sandero offers a trunk volume of about 11.3 cu ft, making it an attractive option.

The Kia Picanto has a trunk volume of about 9 cu ft, which is close to the Smart Fortwo Cabrio. Both models offer more luggage space and are generally cheaper to purchase.

Trunk Volume

The Smart fortwo cabrio (2016) has a stated trunk volume of 9.2 cu ft. This volume is −38.1% smaller than an average car. Relative to the vehicle, the trunk accounts for about 7.5% of the total volume, which is 1.1 percentage points more than average.

Everyday effect: The storage space is absolutely limited – sufficient for weekly groceries, shopping bags, or one to two small travel bags. For bulky items, larger suitcases, or moving tasks, the volume is not suitable.

Vehicle Size and Parking Friendliness

Dimensions: 106.3 in length, 65.4 in width, 61 in height. Compared to an average car, the Smart is 73.6 in shorter (−40.9%), 7.5 in narrower (−10.1%), and 0.4 in lower (−0.8%).

Note on parking practice: The extremely compact length and relative narrowness make the Smart a very parking-friendly city car.

According to data, it is 90.9 in shorter and 33.1 in narrower than a normal parking space, which in practice means easier parking, more maneuvering freedom, and better usability of tight parking spots.

Trunk Usability and Flexibility

Relative to the tiny vehicle body, the trunk proportion is slightly above average – this speaks for efficient space utilization. Nevertheless, the absolute usability remains limited.

  • Positive: Good suitability for daily city tasks (shopping, sports bag, small luggage).
  • Negative: Bulky or long items can hardly be transported; without information on foldable seatbacks or additional storage, flexibility is limited.
  • Practical tip: Those who regularly plan larger transports need roof racks, trailers, or a larger vehicle.

General Model Information

Familiarity: The Smart fortwo cabrio is a typical city two-seater with Cabrio character, positioned for inner-city mobility and lifestyle.

Special features / characteristics: Very compact exterior dimensions and the Cabrio layout are the most striking features. At the same time, the concept limits luggage volume.

Price-performance ratio: For buyers prioritizing parking friendliness, agility, and city use, the concept offers a good ratio. For users with regular transport needs or families, the price-performance ratio is less attractive.

Competitor models: Comparable small car cabrios or city cabrios include the Fiat 500C or the MINI Cabrio; all share the focus on city use and styling but differ in space, comfort, and price.
