Trunk dimensions Subaru Solterra

The 2023 Subaru Solterra offers a trunk with a volume of about 20.8 cu ft, increasing to approximately 56.5 cu ft when the rear seats are folded down.

The rear bench is split 60:40, providing flexibility for transporting luggage. The interior is functionally designed, with a low loading edge that facilitates loading and unloading.

Trunk dimensions vary depending on the model variant, with the SUV shape offering good space utilization. Typical features include a robust construction and practical arrangement of storage areas.

The design emphasizes user-friendliness and everyday practicality, making the Solterra a practical choice for active users.

Model Information

The Subaru Solterra is a fully electric SUV, marking Subaru's first electric vehicle on the market. It is based on the e-Subaru platform and offers a combination of all-wheel drive, state-of-the-art technology, and a rugged design.

The Solterra aims to appeal to both environmentally conscious drivers and SUV enthusiasts. With a focus on safety, comfort, and functionality, the Solterra is an interesting option in the growing electric vehicle market.

Variants of the Same Line

The Subaru Solterra is currently offered as an SUV and has no other variants such as sedan or convertible. The model line focuses on the SUV category, clearly differentiating it from other Subaru models like the Outback or Forester.

It is important not to confuse the Solterra with these models, as they feature different drive technologies and body styles.

Yearly Differences

Since the Subaru Solterra is a new model, no significant changes have been made to the body or trunk dimensions so far. Future model years may see adjustments based on customer feedback or technological developments.

It is advisable to check specifications when new model years are introduced to consider possible changes in trunk volume or overall vehicle size.

Direct Competition

In the segment of fully electric SUVs, the Subaru Solterra competes with models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 offers a trunk volume of about 18.6 cu ft, while the Kia EV6 has around 17.3 cu ft.

These differences in trunk volume can be decisive for buyers who value maximum cargo capacity. The Solterra thus positions itself in the mid-range regarding trunk volume.

More Affordable Alternatives

More affordable models with similar trunk dimensions include the Dacia Duster and the Skoda Kamiq. The Dacia Duster offers a trunk volume of about 16.9 cu ft, while the Skoda Kamiq comes to around 14.1 cu ft.

These vehicles are generally cheaper to purchase but may not offer the same electric drive technology or safety features found in the Subaru Solterra. Buyers should weigh which features are most important to them.

Trunk Volume

The Subaru Solterra (2022) has a manufacturer-stated trunk volume of 16 cu ft. This corresponds to approximately +7.62% compared to an average car. Relative to the entire vehicle interior, the trunk accounts for about 6.3% of the car volume (L×W×H/2) — which is −0.2 percentage points below average.

Practical effect: With 16 cu ft, everyday tasks such as family shopping, several trolleys, or a stroller can be handled easily.

For vacations or larger transports, the volume usually suffices for 2–3 large suitcases plus carry-on luggage; those who frequently transport very bulky loads need the option to fold down the rear seats.

Vehicle Size and Parking Friendliness

Dimensions: 184.6 in length, 73.2 in width, 65 in height.

Compared to average, the Solterra is 5.1 in longer (≈2.8%), 0.4 in wider (≈0.5%), and 3.5 in taller (≈5.5%).

Compared to a typical parking space, it is reportedly 12.2 in shorter and 25.2 in narrower — meaning that in a standard parking spot (approx. 500 × 98.4 in), about 12.6 in of space remains on each side when the vehicle is centered.

Practical effect: Due to its slightly above-average length and width, the Solterra appears SUV-typical but remains practically parkable in normal parking spaces.

In very tight city areas or narrow driveways, a bit more attention is needed than with compact small cars; height and width are usually unproblematic for garages and parking garages.

Trunk Usability and Flexibility

The stated capacity provides a good base size but says nothing about shape, loading floor height, pass-through, or seat splits — these details determine comfort in daily use. Foldable rear seats are common in this vehicle class, significantly increasing usability.

Practical effect:

For shopping, strollers, or luggage, the volume is comfortable for everyday use.
For very long items, the ability to fold down rear seats is recommended (check before purchase).
Practical usability strongly depends on loading floor shape, trunk opening, and loading edge — this should be tested during inspection.

General Model Information

Familiarity: The Solterra is Subaru's entry into the fully electric SUV segment (model year 2022) and was developed jointly with Toyota.

Special features / characteristics: Typical for Subaru is the focus on all-wheel capability and robustness — the Solterra offers electric drive variants with AWD, distinguishing it in the class from purely road-oriented EVs.

Price/performance ratio: Positioned in the compact to mid-size electric SUV segment; value strongly depends on equipment, range, and AWD configuration. For buyers seeking all-wheel drive and Subaru brand values (safety, off-road capability), the price-performance ratio can be attractive.

Competitor models: Direct and indirect competitors include the Toyota bZ4X (close relative), as well as other compact/mid-size electric SUVs like Volkswagen ID.4, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, or similar models.

Conclusion: The Solterra offers a practical base with 16 cu ft of trunk space for everyday and family use; dimensions are SUV-typical but still parking-friendly. Those who frequently transport very bulky loads should check the foldability of the rear seats and trunk shape when purchasing.
