Trunk dimensions Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan

The Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan 2019 offers a trunk with a volume of 17.6 cu ft with the rear seats upright and up to 53.7 cu ft with the seats folded down.

The rear seat is split 60:40, allowing flexibility for transport. The interior is functionally designed, with a low loading edge that makes loading and unloading easier.

The trunk dimensions vary slightly within the model range but generally remain generous and practical. Typical features include the rectangular shape and good accessibility, making the Sportsvan a versatile vehicle for families and leisure activities.

Model Information

The VW Golf Sportsvan is a compact van based on the proven Golf platform. It combines the versatility of a van with the driving characteristics of a compact car.

The latest series offers modern equipment, efficient engines, and an appealing design. The Sportsvan targets families and active people who value space and comfort.

Variants of the Same Series

Within the Golf range, there are various variants that differ in design and functionality. These include the sedan, convertible, hatchback, and wagon.

The Golf Sportsvan stands out with its raised roofline and larger interior space. It is important not to confuse these variants as they appeal to different target groups.

Yearly Differences

The Golf Sportsvan was first introduced in 2014. Since then, there have been several model updates affecting body dimensions and trunk measurements.

Especially the facelift in 2018 brought changes in appearance and technology, but the basic trunk dimensions remained largely constant. Therefore, differences in trunk dimensions between model years are minimal.

Direct Competition

In the same vehicle class, there are several comparable models such as the Ford C-Max and the Renault Scénic. The Ford C-Max offers a trunk volume of about 16.8 cu ft, while the Renault Scénic provides about 18.4 cu ft, offering slightly more space.

The VW Golf Sportsvan thus positions itself in the mid-range but offers an attractive option through its flexibility and the possibility to expand cargo volume.

More Affordable Alternatives

More affordable models with similar trunk dimensions include the Dacia Lodgy and the Skoda Fabia Combi. The Dacia Lodgy offers a trunk volume of up to 29.2 cu ft when the rear seats are folded down, making it an interesting alternative for buyers needing a lot of cargo space.

The Skoda Fabia Combi, on the other hand, has a trunk volume of about 18.7 cu ft, making it a competitive option as well.

Trunk Volume

The VW Golf Sportsvan (2017) offers a trunk volume of approx. 20.8 cu ft (manufacturer specification). This is 40.48% more than an average car. Relative to the total vehicle volume, the trunk accounts for 9.3% — which is 2.9 percentage points more than average.

With the rear seats folded down, the volume grows up to 53.7 cu ft, about 24% of the vehicle volume (2.2 percentage points above average).

Practical effect: The increased volume makes the Sportsvan significantly more suitable for everyday use than many compact sedans — more cargo space for groceries, strollers, suitcases, or bulky loads without needing to switch to a larger vehicle.

Vehicle Size and Parking Friendliness

Dimensions: 171.3 in length, 71.3 in width, 63.4 in height.

Compared to the average, the Sportsvan is 8.3 in shorter (-4.6%), 1.6 in narrower (-2.4%), and 2 in taller (+3.1%). Compared to a standard parking space, the vehicle is 25.6 in shorter and 27.2 in narrower.

Practical effect: The more compact length and moderate width increase parking and maneuvering ease in the city. The taller build improves visibility when driving and parking; the dimensions generally allow comfortable parking in standard parking spots.

Trunk Usability and Flexibility

The trunk's share of total volume and the growth to 53.7 cu ft with folded rear seats show: The Sportsvan uses interior space efficiently. For everyday use, this means:

Good suitability for families: strollers, shopping, and luggage can be transported without major compromises.
High utility for occasional bulky items: furniture pieces or larger boxes can be loaded up to roof height with the rear seats folded down.
Flexibility: normal everyday transport (shopping, suitcases, sports equipment) in the trunk; significantly more cargo volume available quickly if needed.

Limitations: Roof-high volume does not automatically mean every bulky load fits comfortably — loading opening, loading edge, and interior layout affect practical handling (these detailed values are not available here).

General Model Information

Familiarity: The Golf Sportsvan is the van/MPV variant based on the Golf and is considered a practical, family-friendly compact van.

Special Features: Above-average trunk-to-vehicle volume ratio and good utility value with compact exterior length.

Characteristics: Shorter and somewhat narrower than average, but taller — resulting in a good combination of parking friendliness and space offering.

Value for Money: For buyers seeking a lot of usable space in a compact, city-friendly package, the Sportsvan offers an attractive ratio of space to exterior dimensions.

Competitor Models: Typical competitors in the segment are compact MPV/van models like Ford C-Max, Renault Scénic, Opel Zafira, or Citroën C4 Picasso.
