The trunk volume of the NIO ET5 Touring 2023 is specified differently depending on the measurement method: Manufacturer: 15.9 cu ft, independent measurements: 14.7 cu ft.

An average of these figures is about 15.3 cu ft, which is roughly +2.98 % above an average car. These numbers apply with the cargo cover raised and the rear seatbacks folded up.

With the rear bench folded down, the usable volume increases significantly: up to the window sill, about ~28.3 cu ft (independently measured) was determined; up to roof height, values between 45.9 cu ft (manufacturer) and 50.5 cu ft (independent) are possible.

Some tests also mention a value of 22.1 cu ft when the cargo cover is removed and only measured up to the roof edge — such deviations show different measurement standards.

Practical effect: For everyday use, the trunk corresponds to a typical mid-size wagon: sufficient for groceries, a stroller, and 2–3 suitcases. Folding down the rear bench significantly expands the volume, allowing for bulky loads or moves.

Vehicle Size and Parking Friendliness

Dimensions: 4.79 m long, 1.96 m wide, 1.50 m high. Compared to the average, the ET5 Touring is about +9.1 in (≈5%) longer, +4.3 in (≈5.9%) wider, and -2.4 in (-4.2%) lower.

Regarding standard parking spaces, the vehicle is about 8.3 in shorter and 21.3 in narrower than typical markings — it therefore fits into normal parking spots with remaining space.

In everyday life, however, the greater vehicle width means narrow streets, tight parking spaces, or garages with side walls require more attention when parking and opening doors.

Trunk Usability and Flexibility

Notably practical is the equipment: large tailgate (electric with foot gesture), smooth, well-usable loading surface, brightly illuminated by three LEDs (one LED removable as a flashlight), a two-part loading floor with divider function, and several tie-down and storage compartments (including a roughly 10-l compartment under the loading floor, luggage net, four bag hooks).

Tests show up to nine standard beverage crates fit in the trunk.

Some operational limitations: the electric tailgate has no separate button on the dashboard (control via touchscreen required), the cargo cover must be manually moved when opening, and the tailgate seal/lock plate protrudes visibly.

The rear seatbacks fold down in three parts and can be unlocked from inside, but not from the trunk — less practical for quick loading.

Loading-wise, the loading edge is advantageously positioned, making loading and unloading comfortable. However, the vehicle is heavy with a curb weight of 2,285 kg and a payload of only 445 kg.

This means: with five average adults (each ~75 kg), little capacity remains for additional luggage — the payload significantly limits maximum loading.

General Model Information

Familiarity: The NIO ET5 Touring is the wagon variant of the ET5 EV and further positions NIO in the growing segment of electric wagons/estates.

Special features: electric tailgate with foot gesture, three-part folding rear seatbacks, various loading volume measurements up to roof height (up to 50.5 cu ft according to independent measurements), and availability of large battery variants (e.g., 100-kWh version in tests).

Characteristics / Criticism: no frunk, no separate dashboard button for the tailgate, cargo cover and unlocking not optimally operable from the trunk, risk of pinching outer belts when folding down.

Price/performance ratio: As an electrically powered touring, the ET5 targets buyers who value technology, range, and everyday usability. The trunk volume is in the mid-size range — very usable in practice but not outstanding when comparing measurement standards.

Competitors: usual comparison models are classic wagons and electric alternatives in the mid-size class, e.g., VW Passat Variant, Skoda Superb Combi, BMW 3 Touring, Mercedes‑C‑Class T-Model (increasingly relevant competitors with electrification).
