Trunk dimensions Kia Sportage

The Kia Sportage 2023 offers a trunk with a volume of about 20.9 cu ft, which can be expanded up to 62.9 cu ft when the rear seats are folded down. The rear bench is split 60:40, allowing flexibility when transporting luggage.

The interior design is modern and functional, with a low loading edge that makes loading and unloading easier.

The trunk dimensions vary slightly within the model range, with a focus on practicality and well-usable space. Typical features include a rectangular shape and practical storage compartments that optimize trunk use.

Model Information

The Kia Sportage is a compact SUV that has produced a variety of models since its introduction in 1993. The latest series, launched in 2022, offers a modern design, advanced technologies, and improved driving dynamics.

With a focus on safety and comfort, the Sportage targets families and active lifestyles. Equipment includes a digital cockpit, modern infotainment systems, and numerous assistance systems.

Variants of the Same Series

The Kia Sportage is offered in various trim levels, including the base version, the mid-level trim, and the sporty GT-Line. However, there are no other body variants like sedan or convertible that could be confused with the Sportage. The Sportage remains an SUV and does not offer alternatives in other body styles.

Yearly Differences

The Kia Sportage has undergone several model changes over the years that have affected the body dimensions and trunk measurements. The 2010, 2016, and 2022 generations are particularly noteworthy.

While the 2010 and 2016 models already offered good trunk capacity, the trunk was significantly enlarged in 2022 through improved interior design and optimized shaping.

Direct Competition

In the same price range and size, the Kia Sportage competes with models like the Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Qashqai, and Volkswagen Tiguan. The Hyundai Tucson offers a comparable trunk volume of about 21.9 cu ft, while the Nissan Qashqai is somewhat smaller at 17 cu ft.

The Volkswagen Tiguan, on the other hand, has a volume of about 21.7 cu ft. These differences can be decisive for buyers who place special value on storage space.

More Affordable Alternatives

More affordable models with similar trunk dimensions are the Dacia Duster and Skoda Kamiq. The Dacia Duster offers a trunk volume of about 16.9 cu ft, making it attractive in its price class but not quite matching the Sportage.

The Skoda Kamiq has a trunk volume of about 14.1 cu ft and is also cheaper but offers less space. These models are worth considering for buyers seeking good value for money.

Trunk Volume

The Kia Sportage 2026 offers a very generous trunk volume for its class. The following reference values are available:

Manufacturer specification: 18.6 cu ft
Independent measurements: 20.9 cu ft
Average value (from the data): approx. 19.7 cu ft – which is +32.98% compared to an average car.
The trunk accounts for about 8% of the total vehicle volume (≈ 1.6 percentage points more than average).

Practical loading options and maximum values:

Under the trunk cover: 15.2 cu ft (with variable loading floor, a 35-l compartment can be separated).
Loaded up to the roof edge: 22.6 cu ft.
Up to the window sill with folded rear seats (recommended for safety reasons): 30.7 cu ft.
Fully behind the front seats: 50.5 cu ft.
Additionally about 0.9 cu ft of storage space under the trunk floor.

Vehicle Size and Parking Friendliness

Exterior dimensions: 178.7 in length, 73.6 in width, 65 in height.
Compared to an average car: ~0.8 in shorter (−0.5%), ~0.8 in wider (+0.8%), and ~3.1 in taller (+5.2%).
According to data, the vehicle measures 18.1 in shorter and 25.2 in narrower than a standard parking space – it therefore fits into normal parking spots with visible reserves.

Impact on everyday use:

The compact length makes parking and maneuvering in cities easier than with longer SUVs.
The slightly greater width requires a bit more attention to side clearance in tight parking spaces but offers more shoulder room inside.
The increased height provides more headroom and cargo space, but can be relevant in low garages or with strongly limited ceiling height. The tailgate opening is high enough; persons taller than ~1.90 m should pay attention to the tailgate lock.

Trunk Usability and Flexibility

Variable loading floor: allows a flat loading surface in the upper position (no internal step offset) and an additional small compartment (1.2 cu ft) – helpful for delicate or flat loads.
Loading edge: relatively high at about 28.3 in, lifting heavy items requires more strength or ramp assistance.
Tailgate: electrically operated in standard equipment (Spirit), with adjustable opening height and optional hands-free opening via key – practical when loading with full hands.
The cargo cover is manual but can be stored under the floor.
Interior lighting: only one lamp on the left – too little for good illumination in darkness.
Safety and comfort features: three-part folding rear seatbacks with two-stage recline adjustment; unlocking possible via lever from inside and outside. However, detaching the middle belt and threading it into the roof is cumbersome.
Anchoring points (bag hooks, four tie-down eyes) and the ability to store up to eleven beverage crates increase everyday usability for shopping and beverage transport.

General Model Information

Familiarity and Positioning: The Kia Sportage is an established compact SUV in the C-segment and known for good space offering and extensive standard equipment.

Special Features: efficient space utilization (large trunk with comparatively compact exterior length), variable loading floors, electric tailgate with adjustable opening height and hands-free opening in conjunction with keyless entry.

Characteristics / Weaknesses: high loading edge (28.3 in), only one interior light in the trunk, manual cargo cover, and cumbersome handling of the middle rear seat belt when folding down.

Price/Performance Ratio: Without concrete price data, it can be said that the Sportage offers lots of storage space and practical flexibility for the vehicle size, making it attractive in terms of utility – especially for families and users who frequently transport luggage or larger purchases.

Competitor Models: Typical competitors are VW Tiguan, Hyundai Tucson (sister model), Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Skoda Karoq. Compared to these models, the Sportage scores particularly with trunk variability and high space offering at compact exterior length.
