Trunk dimensions Volkswagen Touran

The Volkswagen Touran 2022 offers a flexible trunk with a volume of about 29.6 cu ft with the rear seats folded down and 16.8 cu ft in the normal state.

The rear bench is split 60:40, allowing versatile use. The interior design is functional and focused on practicality, with a low loading edge that makes loading easier.

The trunk dimensions vary within the model range, with the trunk shape being rectangular, optimizing space utilization. Typical features include high variability through foldable seats and numerous storage compartments, making the Touran a practical family van.

Model Information

The VW Touran is a compact van characterized by its versatility and family-friendliness. The latest series combines modern design with practical features and advanced technology.

The Touran offers seating for up to seven people and is known for its high safety rating as well as efficient engines. The interior is designed for comfort, with high-quality materials and a user-friendly infotainment system.

Variants of the Same Series

The VW Touran is designed as a van and differs significantly from other models in the VW range, such as the Golf or Passat.

While the Golf is offered as a compact car and the Passat as a sedan or wagon, the Touran is specifically designed for families and larger transports. There are no direct variants of the Touran offered as a convertible or sedan, making it unique within the VW family.

Yearly Differences

The VW Touran has been revised multiple times since its introduction in 2003. The most significant changes regarding body dimensions and trunk volume occurred in 2015 with the introduction of the second generation.

This brought an increase in interior space and improved seat flexibility. Minor adjustments and facelifts followed in 2019 and 2022, but these had less impact on trunk dimensions.

Direct Competition

In the compact van category, the VW Touran competes with models like the Ford S-Max and Renault Grand Scénic. The Ford S-Max offers a trunk volume of up to 70.6 cu ft with seats folded down, making it superior in this regard.

The Renault Grand Scénic, on the other hand, has a trunk volume of up to 18.4 cu ft, making it appear less spacious compared to the Touran. These differences can be decisive for buyers who need a lot of cargo space.

More Affordable Alternatives

For buyers seeking a similar trunk volume as the VW Touran but with a smaller budget, models like the Dacia Lodgy or Citroën Berlingo are interesting.

The Dacia Lodgy offers a trunk volume of up to 29.2 cu ft, while the Citroën Berlingo can reach up to 37.1 cu ft. Both models are generally more affordable than the Touran and still offer good cargo capacity.

Trunk Volume

The VW Touran Van 2021 offers a trunk volume of approx. 29.5 cu ft (manufacturer's specification). This is 98.57% larger than an average car and accounts for about 12% of the total vehicle volume — 5.6 percentage points more than average.

With the rear seats folded down, the roof-high loading volume increases to 69.9 cu ft, corresponding to about 28.6% of the vehicle volume, which is 6.8 percentage points above average.

Everyday effect: The significantly above-average loading volume means more space for suitcases, strollers, large shopping trips, or toolboxes.

Short shopping trips and vacation luggage can be transported without rearranging; for bulky or tall loads (furniture, pallets), the 69.9 cu ft with folded seats are especially practical.

Vehicle Size and Parking Friendliness

The exterior dimensions are 178.3 in length, 72 in width, and 65.7 in height. Compared to an average car, the Touran is 1.2 in shorter (-0.7%), 0.8 in narrower (-1.2%), and 4.3 in taller (+7%). Compared to a standard parking space, the vehicle is 18.5 in shorter and 26.4 in narrower.

Everyday effect: Due to the somewhat more compact footprint (length vs. parking space), there is sufficient space when parking in normal spots — the vehicle is parking-friendly.

The increased height (+11%) provides more interior headroom and cargo space but can be relevant in very low underground garages or narrow passages.

Trunk Usability and Flexibility

The Touran combines high volume with flexible use: the standard loading area of 29.5 cu ft covers everyday situations; if needed, folded rear seats create almost 2 m³ of roof-high cargo volume (69.9 cu ft).

Families: space for strollers, multiple travel bags, and shopping carts without compromises.
Transport of bulky goods: folded rear seats enable transport of large, tall items.
Stackability: the high volume allows easy layering of luggage; roof-high cargo space is especially useful for bulky parts.

Practical relevance: The combination of large standard volume and nearly 2‑m³ cargo space makes the Touran versatile — from daily family use to occasional moves or tradesman transports.

General Model Information

Familiarity: The VW Touran is established as a compact van/family MPV and known for its spaciousness.

Special features: Notable is the above-average trunk volume and good usability with folded rear seats (roof-high 69.9 cu ft).

Characteristics: Slightly taller body (+11%) provides more interior space but can be relevant in very low garages. Exterior dimensions are still compact enough for everyday parking.

Price/performance ratio: The main advantage is the space and everyday usability; this is a strong argument in the segment, especially for families or users with regular loading needs. Specific price level depends on engine and equipment.

Competitor models: Comparable vehicles are found in the compact van/MPV segment (e.g., Renault Scénic, Citroën C4 SpaceTourer, Ford C-Max / similar models). Decisive in comparisons is the usable loading volume and seat variability.
